Kean Miller Dictionary Project:

For six years, our lawyers and staff have delivered free dictionaries to third-grade students in every public school in East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, and Iberville parishes. The Kean Miller Dictionary Project, in association with the Louisiana Resource Center for Educators, has placed almost 50,000 dictionaries in the hands of third grade students across the Capitol Region. Every day, Kean Miller lawyers deal in words and the meaning of words.  According to local educators, the Kean Miller Dictionary Project places an emphasis on "reading to learn" rather than "learning to read."

Glen Oaks Middle School:

Kean Miller adopted Glen Oaks Middle School in 1997 through the East Baton Rouge Parish Volunteers in Public Schools (“VIPS”) program. Glen Oaks Middle School has an enrollment of about 600 students in grades 6 through 8. Ninety-nine percent of the students are African-American and eighty-eight percent are on the free lunch or reduced lunch program. Kean Miller selected this school for adoption in order to emphasize its strong commitment to assisting the community through educational endeavors.  Over the years, Kean Miller has engaged in a number of activities to support the school including tutoring, a reading program, Junior Achievement, essay contests and teacher support activities. Another of the important programs Kean Miller has sponsored for the past 5 years is a book drive of new and used books for the school library.  Kean Miller produces a quarterly school newspaper to recognize student and teacher achievement and to provide information to parents. In order to better leverage our impact on the school, Kean Miller met with school administrators and with the NAACP local chapter to determine more effective ways to assist the school. This led to identification of the need for increased parental involvement in school activities and in student education. Kean Miller also provided food and door prizes to attract more parents to the initial parent-school open house while the NAACP recruited parents to join a parenting program sponsored by the local chapter. Since the inception of the Glen Oaks Middle School – Kean Miller partnership, Kean Miller has taken a leading role along with the school counselors in organizing the annual Career Day for the school’s eighth graders. In addition to sending Kean Miller lawyers, paralegals and staff to discuss opportunities in the legal field, Kean Miller also brings client representatives from a variety of professions to talk to the students on Career Day. Kean Miller hosts a breakfast for all career day participants at the school each year.

Volunteer Health Corps of Baton Rouge:

A team of business, health law, and healthcare regulatory attorneys from Kean Miller were instrumental in helping to form and organize the Volunteer Health Corps of Baton Rouge.  The organization is a non-profit established to assist with providing care to the uninsured in the Baton Rouge community.  The group is a link between the private practice community and LSU in an effort to assist the State in providing health
care for those who need it the most -- and who are uninsured.

WBRH:

Kean Miller is an underwriter for WBRH radio in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  The radio training program at WBRH provides industry training for young people interested in pursuing a career in radio production, broadcast, and engineering.

At Kean Miller, giving back to the community is more than a statement.  It is the way we do business.  For more information on Kean Miller's civic activities, or to submit sponsorship information for a community or charitable organization, please contact Steve Boutwell, Director of Client Services, at 225.389.3736 or steve.boutwell@keanmiller.com
