Pro Bono Representation
At the intersection of social and professional responsibility, you will find Kean Miller’s commitment to providing pro bono legal representation. As one of the largest law firms in Louisiana, we believe that every attorney has the professional, corporate, and civic responsibility to provide effective legal counsel to those in need.
In the past 5 years, the firm's Baton Rouge attorneys have handled over 60 pro bono matters through the Baton Rouge Bar Association’s Pro Bono Project. The Pro Bono Project provides free legal services to the poor through volunteer lawyer panelists. Each year, Kean Miller volunteers donate hundreds of hours of legal services and handle cases free of charge for qualified clients.
Kean Miller pro bono volunteers handle a wide variety of matters, including litigating civil rights cases, advising non-profit organizations, assisting non-profit community organizations in transactions and employment matters, obtaining proper court jurisdiction for non-spousal abuse victims, assisting victims of human trafficking in Louisiana, and representing indigent persons in consumer, landlord-tenant, and family law matters. We directly aid individuals with limited means and substantial legal needs, provide legal counsel to help organizations advance their community service programs, and regularly accept court appointments to provide pro bono counsel in both civil and criminal matters.
Kean Miller and partners G. William "Bill" Jarman and Charles S. "Trey" McCowan, III were recently awarded the Camille F. Gravel Pro Bono Award by the New Orleans Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. The 2009 award, given annually, recognizes attorneys who have done substantial pro bono work. This year's award was in recognition of the firm's service as appointed counsel in capital post-conviction proceedings. In addition, Kean Miller participates with the Young Lawyers Section of the Louisiana State Bar Association and the Baton Rouge Bar Association to provide no cost wills to first responders through the Wills for Heroes program.
