Kean Miller Dictionary Project Delivers the Power of Words
On December 10, more than 8,000 third grade students in the Capitol region will receive their own personal dictionary as part of a regional education project sponsored by Kean Miller. For the past seven years lawyers and paralegals from Kean Miller have purchased the dictionaries through “The Dictionary Project,” a nationally acclaimed grassroots organization. Kean Miller employees hand deliver bags of personalized dictionaries to third grade classrooms in every elementary school in East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge and Iberville Parishes on “Dictionary Day.”
The kick-off event will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2009 in the Kean Miller Conference Center located at 301 Main Street (One American Place) on the 18th Floor. Lawyers and staff will begin gathering at 8:30 a.m. At 9:00 a.m., the dictionary delivery team will hear opening remarks from East Baton Rouge Parish School System representative Paula Fabre and West Baton Rouge Superintendent David Carona. After the opening remarks, lawyers and staff from Kean Miller will fan out to every elementary school in the Greater Baton Rouge community on their appointed dictionary delivery routes.
The dictionaries are purchased through a South Carolina-based non-profit organization, “The Dictionary Project.” The goal of the organization is to raise money and provide resources to get dictionaries into the hands of third grade students in public schools across the United States. From 2002 to 2008, more than 60,000 children in Louisiana have received a dictionary through The Kean Miller Dictionary Project. The firm will also deliver dictionaries to more than 2,000 students in Calcasieu Parish in January 2009.
“As lawyers, we know the power of words. The Kean Miller Dictionary Project provides an important learning resource for children in our community – and it is one way Kean Miller can give something back to the Baton Rouge Capitol area. Without the Kean Miller Dictionary Project, many young school children may not have access to the meaning of words during a critical phase of educational development. Many of these kids have access to a dictionary in the classroom, but we want to give them this gift to take home, keep and use year-round,” said Gary A. Bezet, managing partner of the 130-lawyer firm.
