Melissa B. Caruso

Melissa Caruso is an associate in the Baton Rouge office of Kean Miller.  She joined the firm in 2011 and practices in the commercial litigation, healthcare litigation, medical malpractice defense, casualty litigation and municipal law and civil rights defense groups.  Prior to her private practice, Melissa served as a judicial intern to the Honorable Greg Guidry with the Louisiana Fifth Circuit. .

Melissa has experience in business entity formation and counseling, general casualty, health care, products liability and workers' compensation.  She has also represented clients in credentialing matters, before the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners, and before Medical Review Panels.

Melissa is listed as a rising start in Louisiana Super Lawyers, 2015-2016.

  • Representation of municipalities throughout South Louisiana in the defense of federal civil rights suits
  • Representation of Fortune 500 company in casualty litigation, "slip and falls", and food poisoning cases
  • Representation of physicians for MRP proceedings and related litigation, including claims involving multiple specialties to include: internal medicine, family practice, plastic surgery, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, psychiatry, hospitalists, gastroenterology, general surgery, bariatric surgery, and urology
  • Representation of municipality in defense of personal injury claims following Hurricane Katrina
  • Prepared a successful brief to District Court and Court of Appeals defeating plaintiff's claims of a cause of action for spoliation of evidence


Melissa earned her B.A. in History, with minors in political science and scoiology, from Louisiana State University in 2004.  She earned her J.D. from the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 2007. While in law school, Melissa earned a Certificate in International Legal Studies.
