Lee Vail Joins Lafayette Square Conservancy Board of Directors
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the park was largely unsafe for use due to debris and downed trees. In addition, a combination of drought and decreased tree canopy caused further damage to the turf of the park. The LSC was launched by a team of nearby residents, citizens, and downtown businesses who shared the goal of returning the park to its former glory and implementing a five-year plan to re-establish Lafayette Square as one of New Orleans’ premier destinations. The LSC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit managed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors. The LSC works closely with the City's Department of Parks and Parkways and the Downtown Development District, and routinely hosts planting and clean-up days, as well as community events.
