Melissa B. Caruso

Melissa Caruso is a trial attorney in the Baton Rouge office of Kean Miller. She joined the firm in 2011 and regularly represents clients in connection with commercial disputes, healthcare industry litigation, medical malpractice claims, casualty litigation and in the defense of municipalities and police departments in alleged civil rights violations/§1983 claims. She also has experience in the defense of Workers Compensation cases.

Melissa has extensive experience in all phases of trial practice, including motion practice, motions for summary judgment, discovery (including e-Discovery and ESI), document production, demonstrative evidence, trial exhibits, voir dire, jury consulting, trial preparation, witness preparation and examination, and appeals.

Prior to her private practice, Melissa served as a judicial intern to the Honorable Greg Guidry with the Louisiana Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.  Melissa is listed as a rising star in Louisiana Super Lawyers, 2014-2017.

  • Representation of a national natural gas pipeline company in the defense of personal injury and wrongful death claims related to an explosion and fire involving a compressor station
  • Representation of a regional financial institution in resolving Workers Compensation disputes
  • Representation of municipalities and police departments throughout South Louisiana in the defense of federal civil rights suits
  • Representation of Fortune 500 global “quick-service” restaurant company in casualty litigation, personal injury defense, and food poisoning cases
  • Prepared a successful brief to District Court, Court of Appeals, and Louisiana Supreme Court defeating plaintiff's claims of a cause of action for spoliation of evidence
  • Representation of physicians for MRP proceedings and related litigation, including claims involving multiple specialties to include: internal medicine, family practice, plastic surgery, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, psychiatry, hospitalists, gastroenterology, general surgery, bariatric surgery, and urology

Education

Melissa earned her B.A. in History, with minors in political science and scoiology, from Louisiana State University in 2004.  She earned her J.D. from the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 2007. While in law school, Melissa earned a Certificate in International Legal Studies.
