Director of Client Services - Baton Rouge

With more than 150 attorneys, Kean Miller is one of the largest full-service law firms in Louisiana, and the largest in the Capital Region.  The firm is seeking a highly credentialed leader and communicator to succeed our COO as Director of Client Services.  Based in Baton Rouge and overseeing efforts in New Orleans, Shreveport, and Lake Charles, the Director of Client Services reports directly to the COO and works closely with service department leaders, the chair of the firm’s Business Development Committee and the Committee itself, client team and practice group leaders, partners, and attorneys and staff.  The successful candidate will maintain and improve the visibility of the firm, support the business development needs of the attorneys, and implement firm-wide marketing initiatives. The candidate will work in a creative, collaborative, high-performing team environment that provides a unique opportunity to serve in a lead role, while focusing on identifying synergies between the lawyers themselves, and the clients they serve. The candidate will lead a team of long-term, experienced, and dedicated marketing staff, and will be expected to balance “rolling up their sleeves” to assist with operational tasks and empowering the team to leverage their talents.  Successful candidates will exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills, and demonstrate the ability to connect with and motivate highly intelligent, skilled, and busy attorneys.

  • Leads and manages the firm’s overall market visibility and brand identity on a local and national basis.  Works with the firm’s vendors and consultants with respect to design, advertising, online properties, and other marketing deliverables.
  • Leads the coordination of client presentations, materials, content for pitches, proposals and RFP responses.  Coaches presentation teams and assists with logistics and execution of high-level tactics.  
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the practice and business of law, including legal pricing, alternative fee arrangements, and other strategic pricing fundamentals.
  • In concert with the COO, serves as a client advocate within the firm by sharing best practices, conducting marketing training, and coaching attorneys to develop initiatives founded in client service and satisfaction.
  • Conducts client surveys and interviews current clients, referral sources, community leaders, and businesspeople to explore perceptions of the firm and provides periodic reports to the Management Committee, Partners and the COO.
  • Serves as the primary liaison between the firm and the media.  Drafts press releases and coordinates the process to achieve approval, distribution and results. Works closely with the news media to generate positive new coverage about the firm, and guide placement of firm lawyers within news articles on various topics. Places articles written by lawyers of the firm and within target publications, both print and online. 
  • Develops internal and external communications, including e-marketing campaigns, social media content and website content.  Directs content and provides ideas for the firm’s online properties and initiatives.  Assists in the firm’s Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing efforts.  
  • Provides ideas and content direction for seminars and client-focused programs. Identifies and organizes community and public relations activities to raise the firm’s visibility and brand recognition.
  • Assists attorneys in developing individual, practice group, and client team business and marketing plans.  Follows up regularly on those plans and reports to the COO on accomplishments, success stories, and overall efforts.  Develops cross marketing opportunities among Practice Groups and Partners.
  • Oversees the content and distribution of marketing collateral materials, attorney bios, Practice Group profiles and the firm’s external publications (i.e. firm brochures, client alerts, newsletters, announcements, blogs, etc.).
  • Acts as a strategic advisor with regard to business development, supporting lawyers with their practices, but also taking hands-on approach to coaching and execution.
  • Attends and is an active participant in Department and Practice Group meetings and retreats.
  • Gathers intelligence and provides research on firm clients, prospective clients, and market trends.  Provides attorneys with an understanding of the competitive landscape and position the firm for increased effectiveness in winning new business.
  • Leads, mentors, and evaluates a team of three Client Service Team members. 
  • Establishes the department’s budget and priorities, and seeks opportunities to improve department efficiency and reduce expenses.
  • Develops long-term strategies for the department in line with the firm’s growth strategy.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing or Communications preferred.  
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience, with at least 4 years in a supervisory role.
  • Previous marketing and business development experience in a large law firm or other professional services organization strongly preferred.
  • Ability to project personal credibility, professionalism, and a high degree of integrity among practice leadership, partners, clients and firm management.
  • Superior attention to detail and pride in high-quality deliverables.
  • Polished presentation and interpersonal skills required for representing the firm in diverse settings and situations.
  • Superior customer service ethic, communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to gather information from a broad range of sources and to influence others.
  • Proven budgeting, project management, organizational, and planning skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects and meet deadlines.
  • Superior judgment, decision-making and analytical skills. 
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, InterAction, Online Research, MonitorSuite, and other technology tools.  
  • Travel required
